Shivaratri Festival 2023 in Nepal

 Shivaratri Festival

Shivaratri, also known as Maha Shivaratri, is a Hindu festival that celebrates the night of Lord Shiva. It is observed on the 14th day of the dark fortnight of the Hindu month of Phalguna, which typically falls in February or March.

The word "Shivaratri" means "night of Shiva" in Sanskrit. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva is believed to have performed the Tandava Nritya, a divine dance, on this night. It is also believed that on this day, Lord Shiva married his consort, Goddess Parvati.

The festival is celebrated by devotees of Lord Shiva with great enthusiasm and devotion. They fast throughout the day and stay awake all night, chanting prayers and singing devotional songs in praise of Lord Shiva.

In some parts of India, devotees visit Shiva temples to offer prayers and perform special rituals. They offer milk, honey, fruits, and other items to the Shiva lingam, a representation of Lord Shiva. Some also perform abhishekam, a ritual bathing of the Shiva lingam with water, milk, and other items.

The festival is also significant for sadhus, or holy men, who gather at the Pashupatinath temple in Nepal and other prominent Shiva temples to perform special rituals and offer prayers.

In addition to its religious significance, Shivaratri is also celebrated as a cultural event in some parts of India. People prepare special dishes like sabudana khichdi, vrat ke chawal, and aloo tamatar ki sabzi to break their fast.

On Maha Shivaratri, it is customary to consume bhang (a drink made from cannabis leaves and milk), which is believed to be a favorite of Lord Shiva. However, it is important to note that the use of bhang is illegal in many parts of India and can lead to legal repercussions.

Overall, Maha Shivaratri is a time for devotees to reflect on the qualities of Lord Shiva, such as his compassion, wisdom, and strength, and to seek his blessings for health, wealth, and spiritual growth.

Shivaratri is an important festival in the Hindu calendar that celebrates the glory and greatness of Lord Shiva.
